NO MARMITE IN TUNISIA

Life In Tunisia For British Expats

How Does Life Compare in Tunisia?

So how are we finding life in our new country?
I have received emails from a few people and most are enjoying their new way of life, loving the weather and feeling safer with the lower crime rate.  But is the crime rate really as low as it seems?  You definitely see many local children wandering more freely than they would in the UK.  I haven't heard of many old ladies being attacked in their homes.  But I have actually experienced myself an attempted bagsnatch, whereas I lived in Britain for 40 years and experienced nothing.

Feel free to discuss in the Guestbook your thoughts and experiences on this matter.

In general, there are many plus points to living in Tunisia.  The hot, sunny summers seem to last forever!  We also love the fact that food is so cheap out here.  Those of you who could afford to eat fresh fish about once a month in England were lucky, here think nothing of buying a kilogram of shark, tuna or anything else you like every day!  Fruit and vegetables are found in abundance with, a box of plum tomatoes being about the same price as 1 single tomato in Britain!

But What About The Marmite?!

There are of course many foods that we were used to in Britain that we simply cannot find here, but have we been able to replace them with suitable, alternative items?  In our house we have cravings for English Cheddar and Red Leicester Cheese regularly!  Ambassador Alan Goulty from the British Embassy claims that these should be available in Tunisia very soon, once the remaining restrictions on the import of British animal products are lifted!  Try reading his weblog, on the following link :-

One day we may be able to rename this website "we found marmite in tunisia!"

Tips And Advice
Where to find those much sought after items, and which shops you believe should be highly recommended could be topics for discussion as well as the following:-

  • Is there anybody who has mastered Tunisian cooking?
  • Would anybody like to share any favourite recipes, British or Tunisian?
  • How has life changed for you all in general?
  • Are your living standards, accommodation and way of life as you expected them to be;  better or worse?

Discuss this and any other thoughts in my online Guestbook.

Anyone who would like to submit an article about the town they are living in, life in general, British expats groups or events etc, please feel free to email your article for inclusion on this website to nomarmiteintunisia@yahoo.fr
