NO MARMITE IN TUNISIA

Life In Tunisia For British Expats

From England To Africa

In July 2005, we swapped life in our three-bedroomed terraced house in Ramsgate............

For life in our seven-bedroomed, two bathroomed (still to be finished) villa in Beni Khiar, Tunisia............

With views over open countryside and the sea like this ............

With the villa not being completed yet, it is too early to make a fair comparison with life in Ramsgate and life in Beni Khiar, as life feels like it has not "got going" properly yet.

What tempted us to build a villa in Tunisia?

  • A mortgage-free and less stressful life.
  • The escaping from the bad behaviour, rudeness and bullying, as well as poor teaching in Britain's schools.
  • Britain's increasing crime-rate and its slide into becoming a "Nanny State," with parents having no power over deciding how their children should be brought up.

I am hoping that in six months to a year's time that we will be one of those success stories entitled "Why didn't we do this earlier?!"

Land And Building Amazingly Cheap
We have found the total price of buying land and building of a whole house, which includes sculptured, domed ceilings, to be less than the price of purchasing a tiny flat in the UK.  For more information on the legal side to buying or renting in Tunisia the following is a great website which has a host of information in their discussion forum section:-

La Presse the daily Tunisian newspaper has many pages of adverts advertising villas, land, or apartments for sale.  http://www.lapresse.tn/

Tradesmen
Good tradesmen, builders, electricians, plumbers etc, are hard to find, as are good lawyers or architects.  Sometimes you can find the land or property you are searching for much easier by word of mouth from people who really know the area, or from somebody who has already tried and tested the tradesmen, therefore having knowledge of "the good," "the bad," and "the don't touch them with a barge pole!!"
