All those working legally in Tunisia, should be able to get health insurance, paid for by their employer. This will be provided by the CNAM (similar to the NHS in Britain) Those not working and unemployed can access free healthcare if they really have no alternative. They are able to obtain something called a "poor book" entitling them to free medicines also. For Tunisians with their own business, they can also get an insurance with the CNAM and it can cover their whole family. Different levels of insurance can be bought, depending upon the amount paid. For British expats who have retired here, it is necessary at the moment to seek a private insurance. Other European expats have reciprocal health agreements with their countries.

Hi Gemma, if the company is a registered Tunisian company, or an offshore company in Tunisia, they should be registered for tax and national insurance and also registered with the CNAM. All workers in the company should be covered with the CNAM. There was a British company who worked here a couple of years ago who opened an offshore branch in Hammamet. We knew them quite well, and they had to be registered for all of this, and all workers working for them had to be registered for health insurance with the CNAM.

Hi Immy My Tunisian sis-in-law paid 600TD in Clinique Les Oliviers in Sousse in the summer of 2009, and for that she spent 13 hours on her back tied up to a monitor. But ive been with other in laws in the normal hospitals who have paid next to nothing and have had great treatment. i think the best thing is to get good recommendations about the hospital, before the price x
